I rather enjoy number 3, being as I’m in college because I actually want to learn and will probably be in debt 4ever over it. Whatevz, life is short.

Can we talk about how this is only ‘average’ to white middle class dudes a generation ago?

Can yougo to college without working your ass off to even be considered and driving yourself into an abyssal debt hole? You might be privileged!

Can you afford a nice vacation overseas, to a sheltered resort? You might be privileged!

Can you find and maintain a single 40-hour-a-week job (9-5, Monday through Friday) doing light office tasks? You might be privileged!

Can you be accepted for a mortgage? Can you afford one at all? Are you allowed to buy a home in an area that you feel safe and secure in? You might be privileged!

Can you work the same job long enough to get a lifetime excellence award, a gold watch, and a pension? You might be privileged! Also, it might be 1950.

This is only ‘average’ if you’re already on the lowest difficulty setting. The rest of us have to work really fucking hard to attain what this comic thinks is ‘average’ and ‘effortless’.

We live in a world of astounding miracles and we don’t even notice.

So why does the Sun and the Moon are apparently the same size on the sky?

Apparently it’s just a mind-boggling coincidence. Something that has an astronomically small-chance of happening… and yet it happened.

Why is the Moon exactly the same apparent size from Earth as the Sun? Surely this cannot be just coincidence; the odds against such a perfect match are enormous.

Believe it or not, it actually is just a coincidence — and a happy one at that. The Moon and Sun have virtually the same angular size in our sky because the Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon, but it’s also about 400 times farther away. This allows us to see spectacular coronal displays and prominences during total solar eclipses. Interestingly, this hasn’t always been the case. Tidal interactions cause the Moon to spiral about one inch per year away from Earth. In the distant past, the Moon was close enough to Earth so that it could block the Sun’s entire disk and then some. Our prehuman ancestors would not have witnessed the beautiful coronal displays that we now enjoy. And about 50 million years from now, the Moon will be far enough away so that our descendants will only see annular eclipses.

So why do we happen to live in the brief period of Earth’s history when the moon just barely blocks the sun? Indeed, the odds against it are enormous. But the universe is a large enough place so that highly improbable coincidences can and do occur. It’s important to note, however, that even today some solar eclipses are annular because the Earth and Moon have elliptical orbits. — ROBERT NAEYE, SENIOR EDITOR
